(ST. LOUIS, August 22, 2017) Brown Smith Wallace recently completed its two-month-long campaign to support Operation Food Search, a St. Louis-based non-profit organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger and family food insecurity in the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. “Only one in ten children in St. Louis who depend on free and reduced lunch during the school year has access to regular nutritious meals in the summer,” says Judy Coyman, Director of Community Relations for Operation Food Search. “The spaghetti dinners that Brown Smith Wallace purchased and assembled couldn’t come at a more desperate time for many families in our community.”
Firm employees purchased 9,658 pounds of food, valued at $16,322.02, which yielded 850 spaghetti dinners. Seventy percent of our employees made a food or monetary donation during the campaign while 150 Brown Smith Wallace employees donated time to assemble the meals. Between planning, coordination and execution, the firm invested hundreds of hours in this initiative.
In addition to purchasing food, the Brown Smith Wallace social and charitable committee organized a number of activities to increase participation and engagement. Firm employees were divided into teams for a little friendly competition. Teams competed to see who could collect the most food and raise the most money to support Operation Food Search. Teams also had a creative challenge where they built pyramids with the food collected during a two-week period.
In the past, the firm designated one date for the Day of Caring initiative. Employees were allowed to spend half a day, at the firm’s expense, volunteering for a number of nonprofits in the community. This year, the firm’s social and charitable committee selected one nonprofit to support and created a number of activities over several weeks which allowed more people to participate. The main activity, packaging the spaghetti dinners, took place on site in the firm’s offices, making it more convenient for employees to participate.
“I think the results of this year’s campaign speak for themselves,” says Lauren Sanders, Human Resources Director. “The changes we made to our program allowed us to increase employee engagement, which enabled us to help more families in our community.”
Tony Caleca, Managing Partner, agrees, adding that the Day of Caring initiative is a core part of the firm’s culture. “Part of our mission as accountants and advisors is to support and impact the growth and success of our communities. To know that our efforts will help feed 850 families in our community is humbling.”
